Our community counselors found 5 children, all under 11 years old, living under a tree. Their mother had become mentally ill and very aggressive after being abducted by the LRA rebels. They had lived in a mud hut, but in one of her rages, their mother burned down the hut leaving her 5 little children with no place to live. She left them on their own and visited occasionally at which time she would beat them all. The oldest girl made a “home” for them under a tree. They ate whatever they could find.
We brought the 3 oldest children to Village of Hope (their grandmother is caring for the youngest two). When asked what they liked about living in their new home, the oldest girl looked around with a huge smile on her face and said, “Everything!!!”
